About me
Writer, reader, woodsy-woman, yoga enthusiast, maker of peculiar things, unintentional collector of surnames -- that about sums me up.
I spent most of my career writing about science, medicine and well-being, first as science writer for the Detroit Free Press, then at the University of Michigan News Service. I've also written for Dallas Morning News, Health, Fitness, More, Alternative Medicine, Arthritis Today, Science News and other publications (byline Nancy Ross-Flanigan). My memoir, Mango Rash: Coming of Age in the Land of Frangipani and Fanta, is forthcoming from Behler Publications. Mango Rash was awarded first place in the memoir/nonfiction category of the 2018 Pacific Northwest Writers Association literary awards. In addition, excerpts of the memoir were finalists for the 2015 and 2017 Tucson Festival of Books Literary Awards, the 2015 Northern Colorado Writers Top of the Mountain Book Award, and the 2017 New Millennium Writings Literary Award in nonfiction and have been published in Colere.
At other times in my life I have played these roles: student of sweat bee behavior, Fairyland Begonia Gardens field hand, simulated patient for medical professionals, actual patient for medical professionals, ace Western Swing partner, biker chick.
Nowadays, when I'm not writing, I take photographs, make collages that surprise even me with their strangeness, and wander the woods around the West Michigan home I share with my husband, Ray.
